MSK collaborates with IBM to teach Watson in the Fight Against Cancer.

Publicado em 8 de jan de 2014
As one of America's first cancer centers, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has always been on the vanguard of the fight against cancer. Now IBM and Memorial Sloan Kettering are collaborating to teach the innovative cognitive computing capabilities of IBM Watson to take the next big step. Using teams of doctors, scientists, and researchers, Memorial Sloan Kettering is training IBM Watson to become an expert in helping doctors treat cancer, while also assisting in vital research. These experts describe how Watson's ability to analyze massive volumes of clinical, forensic, and historical research data will help oncologists anywhere to rapidly deliver answers to complex, natural language queries, and to help enrich the lives of patients.

IBM Watson Demo Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment 8 min

Publicado em 6 de jan de 2014
The IBM Watson Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Adviser demo was created in close collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering, one of the world's preeminent cancer treatment and research institutions. The demo scenario follows the interactions of a hypothetical oncologist and patient as they move through consultations, tests, treatment options, patient preferences and pre-authorization. It showcases IBM Watson's capabilities in natural language processing, hypothesis generation and evaluation, and machine learning. For more information on IBM Systems, visit http://ibm.co/RKEeMO.

Dr. Craig Venter - Life at the Speed of Light

Publicado em 6 de ago de 2014
NASA Ames Research Center Director's Colloquium, June 24, 2014, Moffett Field, California. Human deep space exploration missions require a thorough understanding of the prolonged environmental effects on life. The use of genomics and synthetic biology will transform such missions by reducing the overall risk and mass needed to sustain crew health in space. As the lead Center for space biology and synthetic biology, NASA Ames is in pursuit of these challenges.

Regarded as one of the leading scientists in genomic research of the 21st century, J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., will speak about the profound impacts these new tools will have on human¹s existence on Earth and beyond.

The NASA Ames Director's Colloquium Summer Series was presented by the Office of the Chief Scientist as part of the Center's 75th anniversary celebration.

The Role of Bioprinting in Rejuvenation - Gabor Forgacs

Publicado em 17 de mar de 2015
Rejuvenation Biotechnology 2014
Cardiovascular Disease Session 2 (August 21, 2014, 2:30pm)

"The Role of Bioprinting in Rejuvenation"
Presenter: Gabor Forgacs, Professor, Biophysics Laboratory, Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Missouri-Columbia; Founder, Organovo.

Dr. Gabor Forgacs is a theoretical physicist turned bioengineer turned innovator and entrepreneur. He is the George H. Vineyard Professor of Biological Physics at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the Executive and Scientific Director of the Shipley Center for Innovation at Clarkson University and scientific founder of Organovo, Inc. and Modern Meadow, Inc.

He was trained as a theoretical physicist at the Roland Eotvos University, Budapest, Hungary and the Landau Institute of Theoretical Physics, Moscow, USSR. He also has a degree in biology. His research interests span from topics in theoretical physics to physical mechanisms in early embryonic development.

He is the co-author of the celebrated text in the field, “Biological Physics of the Developing Embryo” (Cambridge University Press, 2005) that discusses the fundamental morphogenetic mechanisms evident in early development. These mechanisms are being applied to building living structures of prescribed shape and functionality using bioprinting, a novel tissue engineering technology he pioneered. He is the author of over 160 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 5 books.

He has been recognized by numerous awards and citations. In particular, he was named as one of the “100 most innovative people in business in 2010” by FastCompany.

Gabor Forgacs: Bioprinting human tissue could lead to immortality

Publicado em 2 de nov de 2015
That's the guiding principle behind the work of Gabor Forgacs, a pioneer in bioprinting and founder of Organovo, which specialises in the field of making human tissue to order. The technology for printing, say, a working human heart isn't quite there yet, but as Forgacs told the WIRED2015 audience at London's Tobacco Dock, the science is sound and it's only a matter of time before lab-printed replacements are a medical reality.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
